What is CNC Turning?

CNC Turning RAPMAF

Crafting Precision in Rotation

CNC (Computer Numerical Control) turning is a manufacturing process where a bar of material is held in a chuck and rotated while a stationary cutting tool is fed to the piece to remove material. This process is ideal for creating components with cylindrical, conical, or spherical features, such as shafts, pins, connectors, and fittings.

We understand you may have questions about our 5-axis machining services. Here are answers to some common inquiries to help you get started.

The key difference lies in which part moves. In turning, the workpiece rotates while a stationary tool cuts it. In milling, the workpiece is stationary while a rotating tool moves around it.

Swiss turning is a specialized process where the workpiece is fed through a guide bushing, providing maximum support near the cutting point. It is ideal for producing very small, long, and complex parts with extremely tight tolerances, common in medical and electronics.

Live tooling refers to rotating cutting tools, like end mills or drills, that are mounted in the lathe’s turret. This allows a turning center to perform secondary milling, drilling, and tapping operations without needing a second machine.

We use high-precision collet chucks, tailstock support for longer parts, and in-process adjustments. Our quality control relies on advanced optical comparators and CMMs to measure and verify concentricity and Total Indicated Runout (TIR).

Yes, our turning centers are equipped with collets and chucks that can securely hold and machine hexagonal or square bar stock. This is common for creating fittings and custom fasteners.

A bar feeder is an automated mechanism that continuously feeds long bars of material into the CNC lathe. It enables “lights-out” manufacturing for high-volume production, significantly reducing labor costs and lead times.

A general guideline is to keep the L:D ratio below 10:1 to avoid deflection and vibration. For longer parts, we use a tailstock or Swiss-type machines to provide the necessary support for maintaining accuracy.

Knurling is a process that creates a patterned texture on a part for grip. We offer two primary patterns: diamond knurling, which provides a multi-directional grip, and straight knurling, which is useful for axial grip.

Yes, this is a key capability of our turn-mill centers. Using live tooling, we can accurately drill off-center holes, mill flats, or machine other features that are not on the part’s central axis.

With fine-tuned cutting parameters and specialized inserts, we can achieve a surface roughness as low as 0.2 μm (Ra), which is a very smooth, almost reflective finish. For mirror finishes, post-process polishing is required.

We use specialized low-pressure collets or custom soft jaws that distribute clamping force evenly around the tube. We also use sharp tools and optimized cutting strategies to minimize tool pressure and prevent deformation.

A chuck has adjustable jaws and is more versatile for a range of diameters and irregular shapes. A collet is a sleeve that provides a much more precise and uniform grip on a specific diameter, making it ideal for high-precision and production work.

Yes, we can perform hard turning on steels with hardness up to 60 HRC. This process uses specialized CBN (Cubic Boron Nitride) inserts and can often eliminate the need for post-machining grinding, saving time and cost.

For parts with both types of features, we prioritize using our turn-mill centers to complete them in a single setup for maximum accuracy. If a part’s complexity exceeds single-setup capabilities, it seamlessly moves from our turning to our milling department with a unified quality plan.
