What Is Custom Gear Machining?

Gear Machining RAPMAF

Transforming Raw Material Into Motion

Custom gear machining is the process of manufacturing gears to exact specifications from solid raw material. Using advanced processes like CNC hobbing, shaping, milling, and grinding, we precisely cut gear teeth to achieve specific profiles, pitches, and pressure angles. This ensures optimal performance, perfect meshing, and the required torque transmission for your unique application.

A Comprehensive Range of

Gear Types

Gear Machining RAPMAF

Spur Gears

The most common gear type, used to transmit power between parallel shafts. Ideal for a wide range of industrial and automotive applications.

Gear Machining RAPMAF

Helical Gears

Offer smoother, quieter operation than spur gears due to gradual tooth engagement. Excellent for high-speed and high-load applications.

Gear Machining RAPMAF

Bevel Gears

Used to transmit power between intersecting shafts, typically at a 90-degree angle. Essential for right-angle drive systems.

Gear Machining RAPMAF

Worms & Worm Gears

Provide large speed reductions in a compact space. They are self-locking, making them ideal for lifting and conveyor applications.

Gear Machining RAPMAF

Racks & Pinions

Convert rotational motion into linear motion. Crucial for steering systems, machine tool slides, and automation actuators.

Gear Machining RAPMAF

Splines (Internal & External)

Used to transmit torque between a shaft and a hub. We machine both internal and external splines with high precision.

A cost-effective choice for general-purpose, low-to-medium load applications where high strength is not the primary concern.

Gear Machining RAPMAF

Bronze & Brass (C932, C954)

Excellent for worm gears due to its low coefficient of friction against steel. Also offers good corrosion resistance.

Gear Machining RAPMAF

Delrin (POM) & Acetal

Offers low friction, high stiffness, and excellent dimensional stability. Ideal for quiet, low-load applications in consumer products and electronics.

Gear Machining RAPMAF

Nylon (PA6/6)

Known for its toughness, wear resistance, and self-lubricating properties. A great metal replacement for many applications.

Gear Machining RAPMAF

If your project requires a specific material not listed here, our engineering team can source it to meet your exact specifications.

Heat Treatment & Finishing Options

Proper heat treatment is essential to achieve the desired hardness, strength, and wear resistance in a gear. We offer a range of certified processes to enhance gear performance.

Gear Machining RAPMAF

Carburizing & Hardening

Diffuses carbon into the surface of low-carbon steel gears, creating a hard, wear-resistant case and a tough, ductile core.

Gear Machining RAPMAF

Gas / Ion Nitriding

A case-hardening process that provides excellent wear resistance and anti-galling properties with minimal distortion.

Gear Machining RAPMAF

 Induction Hardening

Selectively hardens only the gear teeth, leaving the core ductile and tough. Ideal for large gears and specific hardening patterns.

Gear Machining RAPMAF

Gear Grinding

A finishing process performed after heat treatment to correct any distortion and achieve the highest AGMA quality levels and superior surface finish.

Gear Machining RAPMAF

Through Hardening

Hardens the entire gear uniformly. Suitable for materials like 4140 and for applications where through-hardness is required.

Gear Machining RAPMAF

Shot Peening

Improves fatigue life by inducing compressive stress in the gear tooth root, where bending failures often start.

Gear Machining RAPMAF

Black Oxide

A conversion coating that provides mild corrosion resistance and a matte black appearance without changing gear dimensions.

Gear Machining RAPMAF

Plating (Zinc, Nickel)

Adds a sacrificial layer for enhanced corrosion protection, commonly used for gears in non-lubricated or exposed environments.

We guarantee that all the files and pictures you upload will be kept confidential and no customer personal information will be disclosed.

We’ve answered some of the most common questions our customers ask about our high-precision laser cutting services.

The most critical information is a 2D drawing with all gear data: number of teeth, module or DP, pressure angle, material, heat treatment, and required AGMA quality class. A 3D model is also essential for programming.

We can consistently achieve up to AGMA Class 12 through our precision gear grinding process. We can produce AGMA 8-9 through hobbing and shaping alone, which is suitable for most industrial applications.

Yes, we can. We use CNC gear shapers to produce high-precision internal gears and splines, which are commonly used in planetary gear systems and couplings.

Gear hobbing is a faster, continuous process ideal for external gears like spurs and helicals. Gear shaping is a reciprocating process required for features hobbing can’t do, such as internal gears or gears with shoulders that would interfere with a hob.

Yes, we offer reverse-engineering services. We can measure your sample gear using our advanced metrology equipment to create a new manufacturing drawing and produce a replacement.

Backlash is the clearance between mating teeth. Yes, we can control it by precisely adjusting the tooth thickness and center distance during manufacturing, according to your drawing’s specifications.

We work with a network of certified, Nadcap-accredited partners for all heat treatment and material testing. We manage the entire process and provide full certification documents with your order.

Gear grinding is a finishing process used after heat treatment to correct any minor distortions. It is necessary when you require very high AGMA quality (Class 10 or higher), low noise, and a superior surface finish.

Yes, we machine high-precision gears from plastics like Delrin and Nylon. Their advantages include quiet operation, self-lubrication, and lower weight, making them ideal for many medical, consumer, and electronics applications.

The pressure angle is the angle between the line of force and the line tangent to the pitch circle. 20 degrees is the most common standard today, offering good strength, while 14.5 degrees is an older standard still used in some replacement parts.

While our primary focus is on manufacturing individual gears, we can provide simple press-fitting and assembly services for gear-shaft combinations. Please discuss your specific assembly needs with our team.

As standard, we provide a certificate of conformance. For high-precision gears, we can provide full gear inspection charts showing profile, lead, pitch, and runout analysis, as well as material and heat treatment certifications.

Typical lead times for a small batch of prototype gears range from 2 to 4 weeks. This depends on material availability, complexity, and whether post-machining processes like heat treatment and grinding are required.

While we require a finished design for manufacturing, our engineers can provide DFM (Design for Manufacturability) feedback. We can advise on how to adjust your design to improve its performance, reduce costs, and ensure it can be manufactured effectively.
