What is Laser Cutting?

Laser Cutting RAPMAF

The Power of Focused Light

Laser cutting is a non-contact, thermal-based fabrication process that uses a focused, high-power laser beam to cut materials. Guided by a computer (CNC), the laser melts, burns, or vaporizes the material along a precise path, leaving an exceptionally clean edge and a high-quality surface finish. This technology allows for the creation of incredibly intricate and complex shapes that are impossible with traditional cutting methods.

Inquiry & FAQs

We’ve answered some of the most common questions our customers ask about our high-precision laser cutting services.

Support format : jpeg, step, stp, sldprt, stl, dxf, ipt, x_t, x_b, 3dxml, catpart, prt, sat, 3mf, jt, webp, jpg, pdf, png, bmp, doc, zip, rar, dwg, xlsx, excel, igs, glb, gltf

We guarantee that all the files and pictures you upload will be kept confidential and no customer personal information will be disclosed.

A 2D DXF file in a 1:1 scale is the gold standard. It allows our system to provide the fastest and most accurate quote by directly reading the cutting paths.

Kerf is the width of the material removed by the laser beam. You do not need to adjust your design; our software automatically compensates for the kerf to ensure your final part’s dimensions are perfectly accurate.

The HAZ is a very small area along the cut edge where the material’s properties have been slightly altered by the heat of the laser. Our modern fiber lasers create an extremely minimal HAZ, which is negligible for most applications.

Dross is a small amount of re-solidified molten material. We optimize our cutting parameters to minimize dross, and all parts go through a standard deburring process to remove any that remains, ensuring a smooth finish.

A safe rule of thumb is that the minimum hole diameter should be no less than 50% of the material’s thickness. For example, in a 3mm thick steel plate, the smallest reliable hole would be 1.5mm in diameter.

Yes. While older CO2 lasers struggled with reflective materials, our modern fiber lasers are highly efficient at cutting copper, brass, and aluminum with excellent edge quality.

Absolutely. Our nesting software arranges multiple parts (or many copies of one part) onto a single sheet to maximize material usage. This significantly reduces waste and lowers the price-per-part.

Laser cutting slices completely through the material to create a shape. Laser etching only removes a very thin top layer of material to create a permanent mark or graphic without cutting all the way through.

Yes, we have dedicated tube lasers that can cut complex features into round, square, and rectangular tubing. This is ideal for creating frames, chassis, and structural components with precise joints.

Our expertise and equipment are specialized for high-precision metal cutting. We do not currently offer laser cutting for wood, plastics, or other non-metallic materials.

We use several techniques, including high-pressure assist gas (like Nitrogen) which cools the material, optimized cutting paths, and using tab supports for delicate features to ensure parts remain flat and true to form.

Yes, it is best to provide an individual DXF file for each unique flat part you need cut. If you need us to create the flat patterns from a 3D assembly (like a STEP file), we can do that as well.

Our standard tolerance is ±0.1mm (±0.004"). Tighter tolerances may be achievable depending on the material and thickness, so please note any critical dimensions on your drawing.

Typically, we work with our own certified and quality-controlled stock of materials to guarantee the best results. However, for special cases or unique materials, please contact our engineering team to discuss the possibility.
