Los Angeles is the manufacturing capital of the West Coast. From the aerospace hubs in El Segundo to the medical device startups in Irvine, there is no shortage of demand for metal parts.
And if you open Google Maps, there is no shortage of supply. Search for “Metal Fabricator” and you will see hundreds of red dots.
But here is the problem: Not all shops are created equal.
- Some are “Job Shops” that only want orders of 10,000+ units.
- Some are “Structural Shops” that weld bridges and fences (and will ruin your precision electronics enclosure).
- Some are just brokers with a website and no machines.
I have spent 30 years in this industry. I know who has the real equipment and who is outsourcing. To save you time, I have compiled a list of the best metal fabricators in the LA area, categorized by what they are actually good at.

The “Editor’s Choice” for Precision & Speed
1. Rapid Manufacturing (That’s Us)
- Location: GuangDong,China
- Best For: High-Mix, Low-Volume, Complex Assemblies, Engineering Support.
Okay, I am biased. But I am also honest.
If you need a cheap iron gate for your driveway, do not call us. We will be too expensive for you.
If you need 500,000 stamped washers for a washing machine, do not call us. We are not set up for mass stamping.
However, you should call Rapid Manufacturing if:
- You have a complex design: You need an enclosure with 0.005″ tolerance and watertight welding.
- You are in a rush: You need a prototype in 3 days, not 3 weeks.
- You need DFM: You don’t just want a “button pusher”; you want an engineer who will look at your CAD and say, “Hey, if we change this radius, you save 20%.”
We specialize in being the “Engineering Partner” for OEMs in Aerospace, Medical, and Tech.

2. Plas-Tal Manufacturing
- Location: Santa Fe Springs, CA
- Best For: Structural Steel, Seismic Upgrades, Heavy Industrial Construction.
- Clive’s Take: These guys are absolute titans in the LA construction scene. I have huge respect for their work on stadiums and massive infrastructure projects. However, do not call them if you need a handheld medical device enclosure. Their facility is built for moving 5-ton beams, not holding 0.005″ tolerances on thin sheet metal. If you are building a bridge, call Plas-Tal. If you are building a product, call us.
3. Bobco Metals
- Location: Los Angeles (Alameda St)
- Best For: Ironwork, Gates, Fences, buying raw steel stock.
- Clive’s Take: Bobco is legendary in Downtown LA. It is the “Candy Store” for metal. If you are a contractor needing ornamental iron for a driveway gate, or if you just need to buy raw steel tubing to weld in your garage, Bobco is the place. They are fantastic for raw material supply and artistic architectural work, but they are not a dedicated precision CNC sheet metal shop for aerospace parts.
Best for Mass Production (Stamping)
4. Dauenhauer Mfg
- Location: Burbank, CA
- Best For: High Volume Metal Stamping, Progressive Dies.
- Clive’s Take: Located right in Burbank, these guys are experts at what they do: Stamping. If you need a simple metal clip and you need 500,000 of them a year, stamping is the only way to go. You will pay a heavy upfront cost for the tooling (Die), but the piece price will be pennies. But be warned: if your design changes next month, that expensive tool is useless. For prototyping or designs that might evolve, CNC machining (what we do) is the safer bet.
Best for Material & Basic Cuts
5. Industrial Metal Supply (IMS)
- Location: Sun Valley / Irvine
- Best For: Buying Raw Material, Laser Cutting Services for Flat Parts.
- Clive’s Take: IMS is a staple in Southern California. They have a great “Will Call” desk where you can buy aluminum and steel same-day. They also offer laser cutting services. They are perfect if you have your own DXF files ready and you just want the flat shapes cut out so you can bend and weld them yourself. They are a supplier, not a manufacturing partner. If you need full assembly, powder coating, and engineering review, you need a fabricator, not a warehouse.

How to Choose a Fabricator (A Procurement Guide)
Don’t just look at their website photos (anyone can steal photos). When you are auditing a potential supplier in Los Angeles, ask these 3 questions:
1. “What is your standard bend tolerance?”
- The Wrong Answer: “Oh, we just eyeball it.” or “+/- 0.030 inches.”
- The Right Answer: “+/- 0.010 inches or better.”
- Why it matters: In the world of assembly, parts that are 0.030″ off will not fit together. At Rapid Manufacturing, we use Amada press brakes with angle sensors to guarantee tolerance.
2. “Do you have an in-house Clean Room or Assembly area?”
- If you are doing medical or aerospace parts, you can’t have your parts assembled next to a grinder throwing sparks.
- We maintain a separated assembly area to ensure your parts arrive clean and ready for integration.
3. “How do you handle material traceability?”
- The Wrong Answer: “We buy whatever steel is cheapest.”
- The Right Answer: “We scan all MTRs (Material Test Reports) and attach them to the Job Traveler.”
- This is crucial for ISO compliance.
Summary: match the Shop to the Project
